Historical notes
The Tavola Strozzi is a 15th-century painting that represents Naples seen from the sea after the Aragonese naval victory of 1465. It is one of the earliest topographical representations of the city, featuring the port, Castel Nuovo (Maschio Angioino), and Mount Vesuvius in the background. It takes its name from the Strozzi family, its former owners. It is valuable not only for its artistic worth but also for its historical testimony of the Neapolitan landscape.
The Villa of the Mysteries is one of the most famous villas in Pompeii, renowned for its extraordinary frescoes. The most well-known pictorial cycle depicts a mysterious rite, possibly related to the Dionysian cult, from which the villa gets its name. The life-sized figures and vivid colors, especially the characteristic Pompeian red, make these paintings a masterpiece of Roman art.
The Diver of Paestum is the only known example of Greek painting on a tomb slab from Southern Italy (circa 470 B.C.). The fresco depicts a man diving into a river, symbolizing the transition from life to death, with a simple yet meaningful style. It is considered a symbol of the relationship between man and the infinite, between life and The Detail of the Creation – Sistine Chapel.
The Detail of the Creation of Adam, painted by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (1508-1512), is one of the most famous images in the history of art. It depicts the moment when God gives life to Adam, with their fingers almost touching. It is a universal icon of creation, humanity, and the contact between the divine and the earthly.
