Historical Curiosities
In 1985, Warhol created his series of works dedicated to Vesuvius. This volcano, symbol of destructive power and renewal, fascinated the artist, who reworked it with his unmistakable pop style. The work was exhibited in Naples and represents the meeting between classical culture and contemporary art.
The images chosen by Warhol for his paintings were symbols and myths of his times: film and music stars, mug shots of wanted men, Coca-Cola, Campbell's soup, road accidents, the chair electricity, the dollar, the gun, the Mona Lisa, the atomic bomb, racial clashes, Mao, the fearsome enemy of capitalism.
Andy Warhol represented these subjects using an effective, immediate but above all familiar language to all social and cultural strata, the visual language of advertising, the media and consumerism.
