The ancient Romans loved to make contrasts mixing pure gold with stones and pearls, as evidenced by some archaeological finds. Pearls, in particular, were in great demand due to their difficulty in extracting.

A legend has it that it was Emperor Augustus who instilled an appreciation for pearls after a meeting with Cleopatra.

Citizens adorned themselves with a wide variety of jewels to communicate belonging to the wealthier social classes and gold was perfect for this purpose, as well as having the ability to last for years.
