Descrizione

Flora Mug with a design inspired by the Roman fresco of Flora, described as a Greek nymph and goddess of spring.

The fresco of Flora of Stabiae is one of the major paintings of the Roman Empire. It was buried under the ash and lava of the same eruption of Vesuvius that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79. In ancient Rome, Flora was regarded as the protector of flowering and grain. Participants in her rituals wore colourful clothes to imitate the colours of flowers.

The fresco shows her intent on delicately collecting the flowers and scattering them with her basket. She almost seems to float in the air and has now become an allegorical symbol of the excavations.
