The statue of Saint Gennaro, photograph by Luciano De Crescenzo La Napoli di Bellavista.

The statue of Saint Gennaro on the Maddalena bridge was erected because during the 1767 eruption, when lava from the Vesuvius reached San Giorgio a Cremano, the exasperated Neapolitans brought it to this very bridge. It is said that the statue managed to stop the lava, which halted right at the saint’s feet.

Luciano De Crescenzo’s shot captures the irony of the Neapolitan people, who, when the patron saint was replaced by Saint Anthony, turned to Saint Gennaro with the phrase “San Gennà, fottatenn’!”
