The Dancing Maenad in marble is a refined representation of one of the most iconic figures of Greek mythology. The work is a reproduction of a relief from the 1st century B.C. found next to an altar and today preserved in the Vatican Museums, Rome.

This sculpture captures the essence of female movement and grace, representing a Maenad in a moment of ecstatic dance, characteristic of Dionysian rituals.

These women were often depicted in art as holding thyrsis (sticks wrapped in ivy and vine leaves) and wearing animal skins.

The Maenads, also known as Bacchae, were the fervent followers of Dionysus in Greek mythology. Accompanying the processions of the god of wine and celebrated it with orgiastic ceremonies and wild dances. These women, known for their state of ecstasy and frenzy, symbolize the liberation from inhibitions, and divided them into different types of dancers: ordinary, ornamental and extraordinary.

The dance of the Maenads was not only a physical celebration, but also had a profound spiritual meaning. It was seen as a way to get in touch with the divine and to transcend everyday reality, immersing oneself in a state of mystical ecstasy.
