Historical Curiosities

The sculpture of the "Dancing Faun" dates back to the Hellenistic period and probably represents a satyr or faun, a Greek mythological figure linked to woods and wine, often associated with Dionysus.

The faun is symbol of freedom, connection with nature and joy of living, themes particularly felt in Greco-Roman culture. The placement of the statue in the House of the Faun, an important Pompeian residence, suggests that the owners wished to represent their high culture and their love of art and mythology.

The discovery of the statue during the excavations revealed much about the habits and aesthetic tastes of the Pompeian nobility. Furthermore, the figure of the dancing faun has become an icon, representing the taste for luxury and refined art in Ancient Rome.
