Cave canem (Beware of the dog) Floor mosaic reproduction on a magnet, 66 x 66 cm, 1st century BC., coming from Pompeii, House of the Tragic Poet. This is probably the first documented sign of "Beware of the dog". The mosaic with the chained dog is not to be considered an exception in the houses of the ancients, but a practice. The peculiarity of this sign lies in the engraved phrase, which later became proverbial. The purpose of affixing this sign was of a precautionary type, and served to discourage any patrons who wanted to enter without permission.
