Cave canem (Beware of the dog) floor mosaic, 66 x 66 cm, 16th century I a. C., coming from Pompeii, House of the Tragic Poet. This is probably the first documented signal of "Beware of the dog". The mosaic with the dog on a chain should not be considered an exception in the homes of the ancients, but a practice. The peculiarity of this sign lies in the engraved phrase, which later became proverbial. The purpose of affixing this sign was of a precautionary nature , and served to discourage any patrons who wanted to enter without permission.
