This bronze plate depicts the Medusa Gorgon, figure of mythology  Greek. 

There Medusa she is represented as a being monstrous looking with snakes for hair. Her power was to petrify anyone who looked into her eyes. And it is precisely her petrifying gaze that makes her one of the most fascinating figures in Greek mythology.

Historical Curiosities 

Medusa was linked to the myth of Perseus who managed to kill her by cutting off her head as he was the only one of the Gorgons to be mortal.   

The Gorgons, together with the Fauns and Sileni, were used as subjects placed outside their homes by the Greeks and Romans. It was thought that they could protect the door from malevolent entities, thanks to their monstrous features and, sometimes, showing their tongue as an expression of defiance.
