Description

The Doryphoros (spear bearer) is one of the most famous sculptures of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It was discovered at Pompeii in 1797, inside the Samnite Gymnasium: seat of the vereiia, an institution dedicated, a bit like the ephebia in Greece and the juventus in Rome, for the physical and intellectual training of young people.

The work was made in the period in which the artist was active in the Peloponnese and probably depicts Achilles with the spear. To make it, Polykleitos proceeded to a series of measurements of young people until he found a mathematical module, which linked the various anatomical parts.
