The Marble Statue of Farnese Hercules is a faithful reproduction of the famous sculptural masterpiece of antiquity. Originally carved from marble and standing 3.17 meters tall, this stunning work of art dates back to the 3rd century AD. and is currently preserved at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

However, the Farnese Hercules that we admire today is a Roman copy of an even older work, created in bronze by the Greek sculptor Lysippos in the 4th century BC.

The Farnese Hercules depicts the Greek mythological hero in one of his moments of rest, after having completed his twelve labors, which symbolize man's struggle against the forces of nature and chaos. The sculpture captures the thoughtful hero, in a moment of pause and reflection after the fight. Leaning on his club, this posture, which expresses both physical strength and inner reflection, has become an icon of power and perseverance.

Historical Curiosities

The Farnese Hercules has a fascinating history that is intertwined with the culture and politics of ancient Rome. Lysippos' work was very innovative for its time, as it emphasized the human aspect of the hero, showing not only his physical strength, but also his fatigue and contemplation of him.

TheRoman copy from the 3rd century AD was discovered in the Bath of Caracalla, a place dedicated to the relaxation and well-being of Roman citizens. The sculpture was subsequently acquired by the powerful Farnese family, one of the most prestigious of the time, from which the name of the work derives.

The statue is a tribute to the superhuman strength and determination of Hercules, who through his impossible feats became a symbol of man's triumph over adversity.
